What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is a nationwide scheme now operational across all states and territories, ensuring consistent support for eligible Australians.

Disability: The NDIS provides support to eligible individuals with physical, intellectual, cognitive, sensory, and psychosocial disabilities.

Insurance: The NDIS was created to give Australians peace of mind. If you, your child, or a loved one is born with or acquires a significant or permanent disability, the NDIS ensures you will receive the necessary support to live as independently as possible.

Scheme: The NDIS is not a welfare system; it is a program designed to help people with disabilities access the goods and services they need. The NDIS aims to improve skills and independence over time by providing essential support.

Do I Qualify for the NDIS?

Your eligibility for the NDIS is likely if you answer YES to three of these questions:

  1. Are you aged between 7 and 65? (For children under 7, the Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) program supports children aged 0-6 years who have a developmental delay or disability, and their families/carers.)
  2. Do you live in Australia and have Australian residency?
  3. Do you usually need support from a person because of a permanent and significant disability? (You may be eligible) OR
  4. Do you use special equipment because of a permanent and significant disability? (You may be eligible)
  5. Do you need some supports now to reduce your future needs? (You may be eligible)

To be eligible, you must meet the disability requirements addressed by the NDIS.

How to Apply for the NDIS

The NDIS application process is straightforward:

  1. Access Request: Call the NDIS directly on 1800 800 110 to make an Access Request, or request an Access Request Form from the NDIS.
  2. NDIS Workbook: Use the NDIS workbook to guide you through creating your individual plan. This workbook helps you identify your needs, goals, and current supports, and includes questions to consider.
  3. Participant Statement: Complete the Participant Statement to provide the NDIS with information about your personal situation and goals.
  4. Planning Meeting: Organise a meeting with an NDIS planner to discuss your current circumstances, goals, and how to achieve them. The planner will help develop your plan, including supports, timelines, and funding.

Using Your NDIS Plan

Decide how you want to manage your NDIS plan:

  • NDIA Managed: The NDIA manages your funds.
  • Self-Managed: You manage your funds independently.
  • Plan Managed: A plan manager assists with budgeting and paying providers.

A plan manager can simplify the process if you’re unsure where to start. Inspire Therapy Group can assist you in selecting a plan manager to ensure you have the most flexibility and control over your providers.

Reviewing Your Plan and Goals

Your NDIS plan is regularly reviewed to ensure it continues to meet your needs. The plan includes start and finish dates, and the NDIA is available to discuss any changes in your circumstances. Remember, the NDIS is a lifelong commitment to meeting your needs now and in the future. Inspire Therapy Group is always available to discuss your needs and answer any questions.

Individualised Support

The NDIS provides an individualised approach to supporting people with disabilities, meaning each person’s NDIS plan is unique. Plans are reviewed and updated as needed to ensure individuals receive the support they need as their circumstances change.
